This secret is proven fact now: Slam-bang copy is the most important element of any site -- and frequently the most neglected.

As one successful online entrepreneur notes: "When you sell or communicate on the Internet, 99% of the time it is done by the written word." (Think about it. Do visitors say, "Golly gee, I think I'll buy from this site just 'cause it looks so pretty" ... or do they buy because you provide them with relevant information in a highly persuasive manner? Uh-huh. Thought so.)

That's why my goal is to produce crisp, compelling copy to lure visitors to your site ... keep 'em there ... and persuade them to take action.

So how do you start?

Is Your Site Losing Potential Customers?

Each element of a successful website needs to work in harmony with the other. Not because it's "artsy" ... but because a coordinated effort is the most effective way to persuade visitors to respond -- to take the action you want them to.  

And that's where most websites fail. So if I (or any other web copywriter) create the most wallet-wrenching copy in the world -- but it gets "lost" on a poorly designed page -- you will lose sales

That's why one of the best things you can do for your site is to let me comb through it from the first page to the last ...
so that my knockout copy will have the greatest effect on your visitors. Here are just 9 of the elements I'll examine:

Objectives. Do you know what the overall goal of your site is ... what you ultimately want your visitor to do? What about the goal of each page? Do the various elements of your site drive them toward those goals?

First impression. As Will Rogers said, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression." And with a website, you have to do it in 7 seconds -- max. What is the probable first impression a visitor has when landing on your site? Does each page -- not just Home -- allow your visitors to quickly acclimate themselves to where they are ... and what they should do next?


Layout. Clutter is the enemy of clarity. Pages should be similar to the front of a good newspaper ... neat and clean and orderly so your visitors can scan everything quickly. Do your pages fit the bill ... or are there too many elements or choices so that visitors are scared off?

Typeface. Do your fonts, their sizes and colors make the copy easier to read -- or more difficult?

Copy. Does your site have an attention-grabbing headline that immediately addresses a visitor's need or problem, or promises a benefit for reading on? Is your copy engaging ... enticing your visitors from one paragraph to the next until they feel compelled to respond to the page's call to action?

Language. Turns out the English teachers we had in school were right about one thing: Grammar and spelling do count -- in ways that can affect your wallet. Recent research by a successful online entrepreneur uncovered that even a single spelling error can cut online sales in half. Why? Because it casts doubt on your site's credibility -- a critical element in gaining the trust of your potential customer. Does your site pass muster in this area? Or are there misspellings, grammatical mistakes, usage errors, or continuity issues (such as sentences that don't end) that shout "Amateur!" or "Beware!" to a potential customer?

 Navigation. Are your nav buttons simply and sensibly marked? Does your site guide your visitors smoothly and logically 
to where you want them to go ... from that critical first impression all the way to a final response?

Links. If you link to other pages or sites, are any of them outdated or dead? Does it make sense to the visitor to include certain links?

Response. Is there a clear call to action on each page ... persuading visitors to take the next step in the lead-generating or sales process?

Whew! Seems like a lot, doesn't it? Well ... it is. But there are even more items I'll review ... before I submit a full report on my findings, with suggestions on how to make your site more effective.

Of course, all this is assuming you already have a site. But what if you don't have a website yet? No sweat. I can give you direction in building a new site ... as well as provide the high-impact copy you need.
